The Gallic Empire broke away from the Roman Empire in 260 AD but was re-united in 274. It included the Iberian peninsula, modern France, the Rhineland and Britain. Within the short 14 year life of the The Gallic Empire, Domitianus was the Emporer for less than one year.

The Domitianus coin confirms the meager historical record that Domitianus briefly seized power in 271 AD. Domitianus was overthrown later that same year in an incident left historically unrecorded. There are only two known Domitianus coins in existence. The one pictured is at the British Museum. The other is in France.

As was true for Domitianus, the benefits of attaining a highly regarded, powerful position and amassing great material wealth in your name can be very fleeting.

The "More Than A Coin" database project is dedicated to those who unselfishly share their time and valuable skills with people in need. Those volunteers create a social benefit that lasts long after their material accomplishments fade away.
